BEADLOOM
WEAVING
THE BASICS AND BEYOND
DAY ONE
Slide presentation and handling of finished work. The purpose here is to
show structural design problems and solutions. Included are some failed
pieces and the reasons for their failure. A variety of design possibilities
are explored. Emphasis is placed on incorporating a variety of bead sizes
and shapes in one piece, including the use of large handmade art beads.
Discussion and demonstration of basic loom setup and weaving techniques,
including increasing and decreasing.
Choosing and graphing individual designs. Participants are welcome to use
my designs or modifications. There will not be one set project for everyone
to do. Each person will choose a project of their own. You may choose to do one of the projects from Designs For Beading On A Loom, or design a project of your own.
Starting individual projects with reinforcement of basic techniques and
discussions of design problems.
DAY TWO
Continued work on individual pieces.
Continued instruction on basic techniques as necessary.
Discussion of advanced techniques, with demonstrations.
Demonstration of finishing techniques, including sewing in of warp threads
and several fringing techniques.
Demonstration of Crazy Cord Maker for making braided cord.
OBJECTIVE
Each participant should go away with a good understanding of both basic
and advanced beadloom techniques and the ability to design and
construct further projects.
BEADLOOM WORKSHOP
Project
I will suggest three projects, but students are encouraged
to execute a design of their own.
1. Funny face, either rectangular or triangular. Need 2 contrasting
and compatible colors and one accent color for hair, beard etc. (5 grams
of each color)
2. Simple Pendant, with or without a special large accent
bead. (5 grams of three or more compatible colors. If using a special bead
coordinate colors to special bead
3. Long "V" necklace. 30 grams each of compatible
and contrasting colors and 5 grams of contrast color. This project requires
a long loom.
MATERIALS LIST
Loom- Participants are encouraged to buy Larry the Loom, The Master Loom. They may be ordered in advance of the class and will be available at the class as well. You may use another loom if it is similar.
Please do not bring any little wire looms as found in Indian beadwork kits.
Small looms are OK if you know that you will be doing a small project.
- Book- Participants are encouraged to bring the book Beading
on a Loom . If they do not wish to purchase the book, the instructor will
furnish a handout with the basic information needed.
- Thread- Size B nymo monocord (flat woven) is best for
Delica beads. Silamide size A is also good. Bring smaller size if you are
wanting to loom smaller or antique beads. I use mostly black thread, or
thread color to match bead color. I will have thread available
for sale at the class.
- Needles- Size 10 beading needles for most beads. Bring smaller
needles if working with smaller than size 12 beads.
- Pencil and notebook
- Very Pointy Scissors
- Small Straight Edge
- Magnifier- If you need it. Please if you can't see the holes in the beads, it's no fun
- Light- If necessary
- Beads- I am using mostly the Delica beads or TOHO Aiko's but other types
are fine. You should have an assortment of all the same size. At a minimum
you need about 5 grams of two compatible and contrasting colors and one
accent color for a Funny Face pendant. For example, purple and green with
gold or silver accent.
If you have some special large beads that you might incorporate please
bring them. Instructor will
bring an assortment of feature beads for Funny Face Project.
- Colored Pencils- If you have them.
- Graph Paper- Will be furnished by the instructor.
- Show and Tell- Bring some of your work to share.
- Lots of Ideas
Instructor will have looms, books magnifiers and beads for sale)
THE TRIANGLE, 1002 VARIATIONS
One Day
Students will all start with a basic triangle using size 10 twisted hex beads which work up nicely on the loom.
All the basics of Loom weaving will be covered including setting up and getting started, increasing, decreasing, negative space, finishing, fringing and embellishing.
Starting at the same spot with the same basic beads each student will make a series of non stressful decisions and will end up with a unique and personalized pendant.
For example, will your triangle hang point up(my favorite) or point down? Either way, will you use a feature bead or fringe? If fringe, what type? Embellish with a cabochon? Add a dimension with a folded flap? Leave a negative space? Colors other than the base color? And the list goes on. Try it, it’s fun!
Kit fee $10. Kit includes black size 10 twissted hex beads and Aiko beads for fringe or other embellishment.

LAYERED LOOMWORK PENDANT
One Day
This pendant was designed to create a simple showcase for a feature bead. One of the problems with combining large heavy beads with loomwork is how to carry the weight of the feature bead without distorting the loomwork. In this case the loomwork is folded in the vertical plane creating multiple layers for visual interest and physical support.
